The Oak Tree Racing Association commenced its initial meet at Santa Anita on October 7, 1969 as jockey Bill Shoemaker won four of the nine stakes offered that season. From `69 through 1975, Farell W. Jones won four of the first seven Oak Tree training titles, but Charlie Whittingham remains the meets all-time leading conditioner in stakes wins with 67. From 1982-`88, trainer D. Wayne Lukas won the Oak Leaf Stakes for 2-year-old fillies seven times and Lukas also won three consecutive Oak Leaf renewals from 1994-`96. With his wire-to-wire victory in the 1989 Oak Tree Invitational, Hawkster established a world record of 2:22 4/5 for 1 1/2 miles on the turf. Oak Tree hosted the Breeders Cup Championship in 1986, 1993 and 2003, and in the `93 running, Arcangues won the $3-million Classic at odds of 133.60-to-1,the longest price to date for any winner of a Breeders Cup event. Laffit Pincay Jr.s 561 career wins during the Oak Tree meets are the most for any jockey.
