Aqueduct commenced its inaugural meet on September 14, 1959. It is
actually the second New York track to bear the name with the first, located on almost exactly the same plot of ground, was demolished in the mid-1950s. The furlong pole from the orginal Aqueduct can be found in the garden area behind the grandstand of the present-day track, and there is also a historical marker commemorating the 1920 Dwyer Stakes, in which Man o War defeated a very game John P. Grier by 1 1/2 lengths. Hall of Famer Kelso won 20 of 27 career starts at Aqueduct.. While Belmont Park was being rebuilt, Aqueduct, from 1963-`67, hosted the Belmont Stakes with the winners of those renewals, in chronological order, were Chateaugay, Quadrangle, Hail to All, Amberoid, and Damascus. Aqueduct was the first New York track to host a Breeders' Cup which took place on November 2, 1985. The Cigar Mile is named for the great, Cigar, who won the race (then the NYRA Mile) in 1994.
