Colonial Downs commenced its inaugural season on September 1, 1997 and is the first Virginia track to conduct extended race meets since the Jamestown Jockey Club, which operated in Norfolk from 1908-14. Colonial Downs is situated adjacent to Interstate 64, halfway between Richmond and Williamsburg with its main racing surface measuring 1 1/4 miles in circumference while the turf course has a maximum circumference of 1
1/8 miles, is 180 feet wide, and can accommodate ten different rail positions. Victory Gallop, the 1998 Belmont Stakes winner, won a pair of stakes at age two at Colonial, and Da Hoss prepped for his `98 Breeders' Cup Mile victory with a win in Colonial allowance company.
