Thoroughbred Horse Racing

Thoroughbreds are the primary racehorses because they have the distinctive ability to gallop at high speeds across long distances. For centuries, Thoroughbreds have been specifically bred for speed and endurance and the resulting breed is quite exceptional. They can run at a speed of forty miles per hour for more than one mile. This combination of endurance and speed distinguishes Thoroughbred horses from every other animal in the world. Aside from the racing that many Thoroughbreds are destined for, Thoroughbreds are ridden for steeplechase and polo activities. The founding Thoroughbred stallions Byerly Turk, the Darley Arabian and the Godolphin Arabian, imported to Great Britian from the Middle East and Turkey between 1689 and 1729, mated with powerful English horses. All Thoroughbred horses can be traced back to the three stallions. Bull Rock was the first Thoroughbred brought to America. From 1730, the year Bull Rock was imported, to 1775, 186 Thoroughbreds were imported to the American colonies. These Thoroughbreds marked a foundation for Thoroughbred racing in America. The lineage of these horses and Thoroughbreds throughout the world is well tracked and recorded. Many Thoroughbred horses today can even be traced back to the British Stud Book, initiated in 1791. Stud records in the U.S. were initiated in 1868. Currently, the U.S. is the world's largest Thoroughbred horse racing center. Fifty-five thousand Thoroughbred foals are registered each year in the U.S.
