Robert B. Lewis (G2) at Santa Anita: Trainer John Shirreffs won the 2005 Kentucky Derby (G1) with GIACOMO and he’s hoping to duplicate that feat this year with GORMLEY or ROYAL MO ($5.00), the lightly raced but improving son of UNCLE MO, who is now a prefect two-for-two around two turns after his victory in this race. San Antonio (G2) at Santa Anita: I went all in on ACCELERATE, who finished a distant and disappointing third, but the story of the race was HOPPERTUNITY ($7.00), who won this graded stakes for the second consecutive year on his way to amassing over $4 million in career earnings. Cool horse. Holy Bull (G2) at Gulfstream Park: I referred in my analysis to IRISH WAR CRY ($10.80) as an ‘interesting item’ and he certainly lived up to that billing, easily defeating Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner CLASSIC EMPIRE, as he remains undefeated in his three race career for trainer Graham Motion. Withers (G3) at Aqueduct: Wet or fast, the racing surface doesn’t seem to bother EL AREEB ($3.10) as this son of EXCHANGE RATE extended his winning streak to four races with another dominating performance, remaining the leading Kentucky Derby (G1) contender from the Gotham state.
