One of the horses hoping to dethrone division leader Accelerate in the $9 million Pegasus World Cup on January 26 is Audible.
Owned by China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners LLC, Starlight Racing, and WinStar Farm, Audible is trained by Todd Pletcher. The four-year-old son of Into Mischief has earned $1.2 million with five wins in eight starts.
Pros: Audible, a $500,000 juvenile purchase, already has two graded stakes wins over the Gulfstream Park main track. After breaking his maiden and winning an allowance event at Aqueduct in late 2017, Audible burst onto the sophomore scene by winning the Holy Bull Stakes (G2) and the Florida Derby (G1) by a combined 8 ½ lengths in February and March. That left him as the fourth choice for the 2018 Kentucky Derby (G1); Audible finished third, beaten less than three lengths by Justify.
Various issues kept Audible away from the races, but he made his return in the $200,000 Cherokee Run Stakes at Churchill Downs on November 3. Well-regarded at the windows and already proven against better company, Audible made his return a winning one, scoring by two lengths despite a five-wide bid into the stretch. That race was run over seven furlongs.
Audible is already proven over the Gulfstream Park main track and over the 1 1/8-mile distance of the Pegasus.
Cons: Returning to Gulfstream Park for the Harlan’s Holiday Stakes (G3) on December 15, Audible was heavily favored and expected to win but got beat by 25-1 shot Sir Anthony, who held him off to the wire over a wet racetrack. That race was only 1 1/16 miles; the Pegasus will give Audible more room to work with. He has worked four times at Palm Beach Downs since then, including a four-furlong move on January 19 in :48.42. Regular rider Javier Castellano will jump ship to ride expected Pegasus second-choice City of Light, which gave Prat the nod.
Entries for the Pegasus World Cup will be drawn Tuesday at Gulfstream Park at 11:30 Eastern.
