TVG Expert: Matt Carothers
The Maryland Sprint is a Grade 3 that has a nice mixture of veteran sprinters intertwined with some younger runners that are on the improve. It definitely looks like a tough race to find a single if you are a horizontal player.
Two of the top 3 betting choices will likely be the ultra-fast Lewisfield and the speedy Wentz, which means the pace should be scorching. For that reason, I will go with Proforma as my top pick, as he looks to be the race’s best closer. After a poor break he rallied to finish a strong third on turf behind a very talented runner from the Jeremiah Englehart barn named Dirty. Proforma is better on dirt and ran second behind Wynn Time in his last start on the main. For context, Wynn Time has been in the money in all eleven starts, with eight wins.
My 2nd choice will be Wentz. While I was celebrating my wife’s 40th birthday at Keeneland, I looked up at a monitor and watched Wentz dig in and win a race that it looked like he had lost. He was on the lead all the way to midstretch, got passed by a really good horse in Curate, but fought back against the bias to score. The rail was no good all day, which makes his win that much more impressive.
New York Central is one of those up and comers I mentioned at the top. He ran a really solid 5th of 12 at 22-1 in the Grade 3 Commonwealth at Keeneland, April 6th. He is on the improve, tactical, and the turn back should give him more of a late kick. I will put him 3rd, but a win wouldn’t surprise me in the least.
