Jose Ortiz will ride Preakness Stakes third choice #12 Anothertwistafate (6-1), while brother Irad will be aboard popular #2 Bourbon War (12-1) in the 144thrunning of the second jewel of the Triple Crown.
Anothertwistafate is coming into the race off of two second place finishes, which prevented him from making the Kentucky Derby field, but has been wowing onlookers while training at Golden Gate Fields.
“It’s going to be my first-time riding Anothertwistafate but I’ve been watching lot a video of this horse,” Jose said. “He sure has talent. He got boxed in in the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland and still managed to finish second. I love the way how he cleared from his rivals in the El Camino Real Derby. Regarding the Preakness Stakes, I like our post position; with his tactical speed we should be able to find a good spot in the first turn. The horse has finished first or second five times in 6 starts. I do like our chances this Saturday. I would like to thank the connections for this opportunity.”
Bourbon War was fourth in the Xpressbet Florida Derby (G1) last out, where he was the 2-1 second choice. Winning that race was subsequent Kentucky Derby first place finisher Maximum Security, who was disqualified for interference. Bourbon War had previously finished second in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) and won an allowance race at Gulfstream Park impressively over Sunland Park Derby (G3) winner Cutting Humor.
“We should have won the Fountain of Youth,” Irad said. “I loved this horse coming up to the Florida Derby, unfortunately he didn’t fire that day. He’s been training great at Belmont Park and is well rested for this race. I know Mark (Hennig) is adding blinkers, he wants to keep him focussed and make sure Bourbon War will be there when I ask him. This horse defeated Cutting Humor back in January. We should have enough pace in this the race, and the weather looks good for Saturday. I’m very excited.”
The brothers will be at Pimlico Friday and Saturday to ride in the 16 stakes races spread out over the two cards.
On Friday, Irad rides Miss Imperial in the Miss Preakness (G3), Just Whistle in the Pimlico Special (G3), and Cookie Dough in the Black Eyed Susan (G2). Jose rides Please Flatter Me in the Miss Preakness, You’re to Blame in the Special, and Sweet Diane in the Black Eyed Susan.
Jose’s Saturday mounts include Proforma in the Maryland Sprint Stakes (G3), Vine Vegas in the Gallorette (G3), Lexitonian in the Chick Lang (G3), and Have At It in the Dixie Stakes (G2). Irad rides Barkaa (FR) in the Gallorette.
