Pimlico Race 13 - The Preakness Stakes
History will be made in the 144th running of the Preakness, it will mark the first time ever, BOTH Kentucky Derby winners will not run in the Second Jewel of the Triple Crown. I’ll let my ‘both’ comment be my only reference surrounding the controversy in the Kentucky Derby for now. Thankfully, it’s time to move on.
With no Triple Crown pursuit coming into this year’s Preakness, a common refrain I’ve heard is: “There’s no excitement this year.” Really? Let me be very clear, I love the history of thoroughbred racing. Witnessing the Triple Crown sweeps of American Pharoah and Justify will stay with me forever. However, during those historic sweeps the races were predictable and not very bettable. History is nice, making racks on racks is equally nice; in most cases better.
The 2019 Preakness IS VERY EXCITING because it’s one of the best betting opportunities this race has presented in nearly 20 years. Do you like Big Fields with numerous possibilities? Then this year’s Preakness is for YOU ! (And definitely me 🤓)
Here are my Top Three Preakness Selections in Order of Preference:
#5 Owendale - His move coming out of the Final Turn in the Lexington at Keeneland was the best winning move I saw in all the Kentucky Derby prep races this year. Unfortunately, he didn’t have enough points to get into the Derby, but now he gets his chance to prove he should’ve been there.
#2 Bourbon War - His big late run in the Fountain of Youth made him a logical play in the FL Derby. Facing a conveyor belt of a track, and what turned out to be a better than thought winner in Maximum Security, Bourbon War finished a better than looked Fourth. He’s more like his run in the FOY, and if he shows that, he can win.
#1 War of Will - Incredibly he draws the Rail again, just like in the Kentucky Derby, but I think it may benefit him this time. One of the fastest early-speed horses, Warrior’s Charge, lines up in Post 3; this could allow WoW to set-up a tracking position immediately. I’m envisioning a similar trip to how he won the Risen Star over eventual, eventual (yes I used ‘eventual’ twice) Kentucky Derby winner Country House.
