A phenomenal day of racing at Belmont Park was capped by the 10-1 upset of the 2019 Belmont Stakes by Sir Winston.
Mark Casse trains the chestnut son of Awesome Again for Tracy Farmer. Joel Rosario was up, and guided the colt along the rail to get the jump on rivals turning into the lane. Race favorite Tacitus, who raced wide throughout the 1 ½ mile contest, closed relentlessly in the stretch but could do no better than second, one length behind the winner. Pacesetting longshot Joevia finished third, with Tax fourth.
Sir Winston ($22.40) was coming in off a second place effort in the Peter Pan (G3) over this track in May. Coming into the stretch he bumped stablemate War of Will, the winner of the Preakness Stakes. War of Will was already tiring when the infraction happened.
The Belmont was the 11thrace on a 13 race card that had a staggering eight grade 1 events on tap. Chad Brown-trained favorite Bricks and Mortar won the $1 million Manhattan in stellar fashion. The trainer also stunned in the $700,000 Acorn Stakes with Guarana, who won by six lengths over pacesetting Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress. The winner stopped the clock in 1:33.58 for the mile after Serengeti Empress rolled through fractions of :21.89, :43.99, and 1:08.03.
Midnight Bisou won the Ogden Phipps (G1), World of Trouble won the Jaipur Invitational (G1), and Mitole won a thrilling edition of the $1.2 million Met Mile (G1). He outran favored McKinzie, who had traffic trouble throughout, to win by three quarters of a length. $16 million earner and two-time Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow finished third, ahead of Promises Fulfilled fourth.
18-1 shot Hog Creek Hustle won the Woody Stephens (G1), Rushing Fall dazzled in the $700,000 Longines Just a Game (G1), and the day was capped by Marconi holding off Rocketry to win the $400,000 Brooklyn (G2). Belmont attendance was announced at 56,217.
