Breeders’ Cup Distaff

This edition of the Breeders’ Cup Distaff has the return of the second, third, and fourth place finishers from a year ago.  The main storyline is about possible Horse of the year honors for Midnight Bisou as she attempts to finish her four-year-old season undefeated.

I began by asking myself why I thought #4 Midnight Bisou was vulnerable.  Distance? Track?  Bad workouts? Has she tailed off at the end of the year?  Does the pace not suit her?  What makes her beatable coming into the Distaff?  I can’t find any reason to go against her. Her odds will be short and I get that, but, there are 13 other Breeders’ Cup races to get your price.  She’s a Horse of the Year candidate for a reason and the best in her division.  She is 7-for-7 this year, has won at five different tracks and has had plenty of time to get acclimated to California.  This is one favorite I'm not going to try to beat.

#3 Street Band is a 3-year-old filly I see improving at the right time.  She won the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) and Indiana Oaks (G3) this year, but those wins were nowhere near as impressive as her last race.  In the G1 Cotillion, she looked like a winner at the half-mile pole.  She made a huge move going into the turn, was kept wide and out of trouble and defeated Guarana, a filly who won the Acorn (G1) and Coaching Club American Oaks (G1).  She did receive a fast pace to run into at Parx, but looking at the pace scenario for the Distaff, she will have plenty of pace to run at once again.

#11 Blue Prize was fourth in the Distaff last year and this six-year-old mare has rattled off back-to-back wins coming into the Distaff in 2019.  It has taken her a while to get going, but she is very sharp right now.  She’s had a lighter campaign compared to her 2018 season and has shown that when she’s on her game, she can compete with Elate.  She will have to overcome a wide draw, but with there being a decent amount of speed in the race they should spread out early.  Look for her to be coming from off the pace to catch a piece of it late.
