Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies

The best 2-year-old fillies in the land will square off Friday in the 1 1/16 miles, G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. A field of nine will explode from the starting gate at 2:32 PM PST/5:32 PM EST as race 7 on a 10-race program.

Despite having only one start, the 9 1/4-length triumph from #1 Donna Veloce has earned her the morning line favoritism at 3-1. Owned by Kaleem Shah Inc, the owner of 2014 Breeders' Cup Classic champion Bayern, she adds more distance after winning her career debut at 6 1/2-furlongs. I will side with the more experienced rival from post position #7 WICKED WHISPER.  Trainer Steve Asmussen won this very race in 2011 with My Miss Aurelia. This 2-year-old filly has looked sensational in both of her victories, never being challenged in either of her starts. She has won at six furlongs and one mile and should have no issues with the added distance. Jockey Joel Rosario got the chance to know her last time out, winning in the G1 Frizette at Belmont Park. Although she has never raced at Santa Anita, she shipped early and has had the opportunity to post two good workouts over the surface. Expect her to challenge Donna Veloce for the early lead and try to open up a lead as she has done in her first two victories.

If things get a bit heated early on, the horse that will be finishing strongly is #4 BRITISH IDIOM. She finished with powerful strides to win the G1 Alcibiades at Keeneland early last month. Trainer Brad Cox won his first Breeders' Cup race last year with Monomoy Girl and looks to have another talented filly on his hands. Jockey Javier Castellano has been aboard for both career starts, winning by a combined 10 lengths in those victories.

A third horse to consider, and at the longest price, is #3 PERFECT ALIBI. She actually went off at lower odds in the Alcibiades than British Idiom, but because she finished a distant second, her odds will balloon today. Even with that loss, she still has never finished worse than second in five career races. Trainer Mark Casse has won a Breeders' Cup race each of the last four years and looks to extend that streak this year.
