The 2019 edition of the BC Turf Sprint is a completely different animal than the previous eleven runnings. Even though this is the seventh time it has been contested at SA, all of those were on the downhill turf course. For reasons that have never been satisfactorily explained by SA management, there has been no downhill turf racing for most of this year. For that reason, if anyone starts bringing up historical trends or past results of this race, tune them out immediately. The only thing downhill turf races and five furlong turf races have in common, is that they're both run on grass. Completely different races for pace, trip, etc.
Now that we're done with that, let's try to find a winner. As evidenced by Jon White's morning line, this is an extremely difficult, competitive race without a clear cut favorite.
My top selection is the venerable eight year old gelding Pure Sensation. This is his fourth attempt at winning this race and I think it's his best chance yet. He's 9-14 at this unique distance, and has won at three different tracks this year. He's very quick, but is not a need the lead, one dimensional type. He should get a great trip under Paco Lopez, who has never lost on him. For second, let's go with Eddie Haskell. A $50,000 claim in April of 2018, he has won seven turf sprints and made almost $500,000 since the purchase. Rosario rides back and this gelding is 9-14 at the distance. How about a bomb for third. Om doesn't win often, but it appears he's in his best form since his three year old campaign. Might be a little short for him, and he'll need some racing luck with his style, but thing he'll be rolling late at a big price.
Good luck and enjoy what is truly a unique, standalone type of race!
#2: PURE SENSATION
#10: EDDIE HASKELL
Money Back Special Pick: #11 OM
