The Bessarabian Stakes (G2) at Woodbine Racetrack on Sunday, November 24 drew a large field of 12 fillies and mares set to go seven furlongs on the main track.

#6 Xenobia (5-2) is coming off a win in the grade 3 Athenia at Belmont Park in October. The daughter of Falco is in the Jonathan Thomas barn after coming over from Ireland, where she was a stakes winner last year. She has won five of 13 but has never run on a synthetic surface before.

#7 Gamble’s Candy (6-1) has won two in a row and three of her last four, including the Ruling Angel Stakes on October 13. Josie Carroll trains the daughter of Twirling Candy, who will have Luis Contreras back aboard for this. The sophomore filly ran a career high Beyer Speed Figure last out.

#12 Special Relativity (7-2) has won two of her last five races including the Shine Again Staes at Saratoga, then finished third in the grade 1 Ballerina over that track. She was transferred from Robertino Diodoro to Norm McKnight and has placed in two straight stakes here. The horse that beat her on those days isn’t in this race, and she is a winner at the distance. She also has a bullet workout on November 14.

#10 Red Cabernet (12-1) is a two-time stakes winner this year for Ian Black, but that was against Ontario-bred restricted company. She has been top three in five of 11 on this track, but does just as well on the turf. She ran against fifth against males last out and returns to female company today.

#2 Amalfi Coast (10-1) has won two restricted races in a row against Ontario-breds, but has had a stellar year with three wins and six top three efforts in seven starts. Kevin Attard trains the daughter of Tapizar Eurico Rosa Da Silva is aboard, as he has been for all this filly’s wins. She’s scored at the distance before.

#1 Painting (20-1) is royally bred. The daughter of Distorted Humor is out of the AP Indy mare Handpainted and is Carroll’s second of three entrants. She was an allowance winner sprinting here last out as the favorite, and offers good odds today if she can step up on the short stretch out.
