$200,000 Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) at Los Alamitos
Race 4 (Saturday, December 7, 2019: 4:58 p.m./ET; 1:58 p.m./PT)
Mile and a sixteenth on the main track (two-year-olds)
A quartet of top two-year-olds take part in this year’s running of the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) on day two of the seven-day Los Alamitos Winter Daytime Thoroughbred Meet. Yes, this may be a small field, but no doubt there is a plethora of talent between all four. Let’s go through each horse in the field, beginning with the inside post position, and try to predict who will hit the wire first:
#1 ANNEAU D’OR was purchased for $480,000 by Northern California connections earlier in the year as a two-year-old in training. In the career debut on September 29, he broke his maiden on turf at Golden Gate by eight widening lengths before coming back to finish a terrific second in his most recent start, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). One has to worry whether he regresses off of such a huge effort in the Breeders’ Cup…or maybe he is just this good.
#2 WRECKING CREW made his first career start routing last time out in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) and finished third behind STORM THE COURT and #1 ANNEAU D’OR. There is reason to believe he could take a step forward in his second lifetime start going two turns. Leading Del Mar Fall meet jockey Abel Cedillo rides for Peter Miller.
#3 THOUSAND WORDS is one of two Bob Baffert trainees in the race. This $1,000,000 yearling purchase has only raced once, resulting in a hard fought, half-length win as the favorite sprinting six-and-one-half furlongs. Makes his first career start going two turns but possesses the pedigree to enjoy the extra ground. Also adds blinkers for Baffert, who wins at a high 46% clip when adding ‘the hood’ on his runners. The tea leaves read that this is a very nice prospect.
#4 HIGH VELOCITY is the other Baffert entrant in the race. Unlike his stablemate, this colt by QUALITY ROAD removes blinkers, having won his first two career races sprinting.
1. #3 THOUSAND WORDS - Might be a good one.
2. #1 ANNEAU D’OR - Effort in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) was too good to overlook.
3. #4 HIGH VELOCITY - The ‘other’ Baffert.
LONGSHOT VALUE PLAY-#2 WRECKING CREW - Second time routing.
I’ll play exactas with my top pick over my second selection and longsghot value play.
BANKROLL PLAY ($50 Budget)
$25 Exacta: #3 THOUSAND WORDS over #1 ANNEAU D’OR and #2 WRECKING CREW
