With the defections of Eight Rings and Honor A.P., the 2019 Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) only drew four evenly matched horses. The $200,000 race for juveniles is run around 1 1/16 miles, and has in the past produced Triple Crown standouts such as Lookin at Lucky and Real Quiet, the brilliant Shared Belief, and sire sensation Into Mischief.
Anneau d’Or was second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) last out at 28-1. He was beaten only a head. Trainer Blaine Wright has worked him three times since then, all on the synthetic surface at Golden Gate. He broke his maiden on the grass by eight lengths in his only other start, but the $480,000 son of Medaglia d’Oro is out of a Tapit mare and should handle everything about this race.
Wrecking Crew was three lengths behind the top pair in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, finishing third. He has been graded stakes placed three times since breaking his maiden first out at Del Mar over six furlongs. He ran second in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) before the Breeders’ Cup. Peter Miller trains the $875,000 son of Sky Kingdom, who will have hot rider Abel Cedillo aboard.
Thousand Words is one of two Bob Baffert entrants in the race, and they drew alongside each other. Blinkers go on this million-dollar purchase by Pioneerof the Nile, who broke his maiden at first asking on October 26 at Santa Anita. He has had four works since, including a pair of bullets at Santa Anita in November. Flavien Prat will be back aboard for this.
High Velocity rounds out the field. He will take the blinkers off after a hard-fought win in the Bob Hope Stakes (G3) at Del Mar just three weeks ago. Drayden Van Dyke retains the mount on the son of Quality Road, who is unbeaten in two starts.
The Los Alamitos Futurity goes as the fourth of nine races on Saturday, with the grade 1 Starlet the feature on the card. That race drew the likes of Breeders’ Cup runners Bast and Donna Veloce. Bet all the races during the 2019 Los Alamitos fall/winter meeting with TVG.
