It is closing day at Woodbine Racetrack on Sunday, and thanks to a cancelation last week, the track is hosting a staggering 16 races on the card. The action is topped by the $125,000 Valedictory Stakes (G3), which goes as Race 9 with a local post time of 5:08pm. The final race on the card goes at 8:38pm after a 1:05pm start time.
11 horses have been entered into the 1 ¾ mile marathon race, but all eyes will be on even money choice Pumpkin Rumble. The eight-year-old son of English Channel is trained by Kevin Attard and exits the grade 1 Canadian International, where he finished fifth of six. He won this race last year as the favorite and has been a multiple graded stakes placed stakes winner since then. Eurico Rosa Da Silva will ride in his last ever stakes mount; the popular jockey retires after this day. Pumpkin Rumble seeks his 11th lifetime win in his 47th start.
In with a chance is 3-1 Surprise Twist. He is winless in seven starts this year, but has been top three five times. This will be the turf specialist’s synthetic debut, and the trainer, Arnaud Delacour, is four for nine with shippers at the meet.
Recent stakes winner Fearsome is 8-1 morning line. He made his North American debut in October after running exclusively in England. He was five for 15 last year and is three for nine so far in 2019. Emma Jayne Wilson will ride the son of Makfi.
The rest are all big odds. The 16-race card also has a maiden special weight race juveniles going as Race 3; the nine entrants include a Will Take Charge debuter from the Josie Carroll barn named I Love Gold, and a Mark Casse runner in Artie My Boy, by Strong Mandate.
Race 14 is a seven-furlong allowance where the Norm McKnight-trained Alkeline takes blinekrs off along the rail and offers value at 4-1 morning line.
