La Canada (G3) at Santa Anita: The lone Cal-bred in the starting gate, QUEEN BEE TO YOU ($8.60), reinforced the popular notion that ‘it pays to be Cal-bred’ as she emerged victorious in a hard fought and gutsy victory over the Bob Baffert-trained DER LU. Meanwhile, my top selection in the race, the new face in the Southern California Distaff division, HOROLOGIST, never picked up her feet. Disappointing.
Las Cienegas (G3) at Santa Anita: I was skeptical that the distance may be too short for her, but JOLIE OLIMPICA ($4.40) showed surprising early speed and was bet like she couldn’t lose and she never looked like a loser while stamping herself as an exciting prospect for 2020! STORM THE HILL, my top choice in the race, broke from the rail (which is now 0-for-19 at the current Santa Anita winter meet in turf sprints) and finished a non-threatening third.
Tropical Turf (G3) at Gulfstream Park: Horseplayers know it only takes one race to turn around the day and that’s exactly what happened here as I recommended a $20 win bet on TUSK ($19), allowing us to still show a profit for the day despite him being the only winner I picked in all four analyzed races.
Marshua’s River (G3) at Gulfstream Park: Came close to cashing a nice ticket as I recommended an aggressive exacta box using MAGIC STAR ($7.20), who upheld her end of the bargain, but I ‘got split’ when ANDINA DEL SUR finished third.
