El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate: Wow, that’s weird, trainer Bob Baffert won another three-year-old stakes race. LOL. His colt (AZUL COAST, $4.60) now has one win over a ‘good’ track (at Los Alamitos) and another over a ‘synthetic’ track (at Golden Gate), so the jury is still out if he can be as effective over a ‘fast’ track. Still lightly raced (this was just his third lifetime start), but one gets the sense this is part of Bob’s ‘B’ team as he marches forward to the Kentucky Derby (G1) with his loaded brigade.
Rachel Alexandra (G2) at Fair Grounds: In retrospect, I fell too hard for BRITISH IDIOM, without fully recognizing this race was probably an ends to a means as the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly winner was using this as a prep race for the Kentucky Oaks (G1). But take nothing away from the winner (FINITE, $7.40) as she has never finished worse than second in seven career starts!
Risen Star (G2, Second Division) at Fair Grounds: Legendary New York handicapper Harvey Pack once said “never bet on a horse trying something for the first time” and if you followed that sage advice, you landed right on MODERNIST ($27.60), who was the only horse in the field that had run (and won) at this mile-and-one-eighth distance. Unfortunately, I didn’t remember those words of wisdom until after the race!
Risen Star (G2, First Division) at Fair Grounds: We all know how good MONOMOY GIRL is. So how did her half-brother (MR. MONOMOY) pay $17 to win in this race?
