On a day when Gulfstream Park handled a record $53,555,529 in wagers, Tiz the Law ($4.80) stood out amongst a group of 10 stakes winners. The current 2020 Kentucky Derby favorite won the $750,000 Curlin Florida Derby (G1) impressively, scoring by 4 ¼ lengths over eight rivals.
Barclay Tagg trains the son of Constitution – Tizfiz, by Tiznow. Constitution himself won the 2014 Florida Derby, and sired three of the nine runners in the race. Under jockey Manuel Franco, Tiz the Law settled in third behind front running Shivaree (80-1) and Fountain of Youth (G2) winner Ete Indien. He pounced around the turn and kicked away, with the speed horses running second and third. Third and fourth choices Gouverneur Morris and Independence Hall finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Tiz the Law ran the 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:50 flat.
It was the third stakes win for New York-bred Tiz the Law, who won the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park last fall. He now has to wait for the postponed Kentucky Derby, to be run September 5, and the connections have already rulled out the early May Arkansas Derby as his next start. He will look to return at Belmont Park or Saratoga in the summer.
Four runners were scratched out of the race: Ajaaweed, Disc Jockey, Sassy But Smart, and Soros. Other notable winners on the day include Bemma’s Boy in the Kitten’s Joy Pan American (G2), upsetting heavily favored Zulu Alpha, and Swiss Skydiver (9-1) taking the $200,000 Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2). Favored Tonalist’s Shape, who was unbeaten going into the race, finished seventh.
The Grade 3 Orchid Stakes went to favored Mean Mary, while Identifier shocked the Hal’s Hope (G3) at 60-1. He capped a $3,074.09 superfecta for ten cents, with 24-1 Just Whistle running second, favored Bodexpress third, and 128-1 Eye of a Jedi fourth despite blowing the break.
