After impressively winning the $750,000 Curlin Florida Derby (G1), Tiz the Law is the new leader in the points standings for the 2020 Kentucky Derby, which will now be run September 5 at Churchill Downs.
The New York-bred son of Constitution won the Florida Derby by over four lengths, bringing his record to four wins in five lifetime starts. He hails from the same connections as 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Funny Cide with owner Sackatoga Stable and trainer Barclay Tagg.
The only other March 28 prep race was the Fukuryu in Japan at Nakayama. The race went to Herrschaft, who was 26-1 on the board. He is not nominated to the Triple Crown, but officials have said they will expand the late nomination period.
After the cancelation of the Keeneland spring meet – which took the Blue Grass Stakes off the schedule - there are still five official points races left to be run, but when is in doubt. The Santa Anita Derby is slated for April 4, but Santa Anita Park was shut down last week due to coronavirus health concerns. The Wood Memorial was also slated for this weekend, but could return at Belmont Park in May if racing resumes in New York.
The Arkansas Derby is the only race with a new date: May 2, which is the original date of the Kentucky Derby. The connections of Tiz the Law have already said they will not be running in the Arkansas Derby.
It is likely that trainer Bob Baffert will have more than one runner in the race. He trains unbeaten Rebel Stakes winner Nadal, who worked Monday, and brilliant runners Authentic and Thousand Words, who were scheduled for the Santa Anita Derby.
