Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) at Gulfstream Park: It’s often said that ‘pace makes the race’ so when SWISS SKYDIVER ($20.20) reached the half-mile pole in an uncontested 49.12 seconds with Paco Lopez in the saddle, you knew right then that she might tough to reel in and that’s exactly how it played out. Meanwhile, my selection (TONALIST’S SHAPE) failed miserably in her two-turn debut. Bad handicapping on my part (taking a short price on a horse doing something for the first time).
Pan American (G2) at Gulfstream Park: Contrary to the Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2), I handicapped this race very well as the winner (BEMMA’S BOY, $20.40) was my second choice. Alas, I have nothing to show for it as I keyed ZULU ALPHA in exactas only one-way over him and did not box and/or have any win money on him. Frustrating.
Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park: TIZ THE LAW ($4.80) was easy to find as he was the only triple digit Beyer Speed Figure earner in the field. The difficult horse to find was second place finisher SHIVAREE, who obviously outran his 80/1 odds.
