$150,000 Evening Jewel at Santa Anita Park
Race 8 (Saturday, May 16, 2020: 7:00 p.m./ET; 4:00 p.m./PT) Six furlongs (California-bred or sired 3-year-old fillies)
The Evening Jewel is the sister version of the Echo Eddie and showcases a deep field of 10 California-bred or sired three-year-old fillies. Here we go:
#1 SMILING SHIRLEE was an easy winner going a mile against older allowance company and now cuts back in distance. That said, in previous races she has finished behind five other rivals who enter back in this spot. Tough read.
#2 BELLA VITA, purchased for $400,000, races on dirt for the first time and her breeding (by BAYERN out of a STORM CAT mare) suggests she should be okay with the surface switch. Regular jockey Flavien Prat opts to navigate #3 BEEN STUDYING HER, so Umberto Rispoli rides for the first time.
#3 BEEN STUDYING HER makes her first career start in the barn of Kentucky Derby winner trainer Art Sherman. Two-time stakes winner against Cal-bred fillies, she has never lost in three previous career sprint races. Must consider.
#4 DIM LIGHTS makes her career debut on dirt for trainer Steve Miyadi. Last time out, this gal won a five-and-a-half-furlong turf sprint against Cal-bred maidens. Now she takes the biggest jump up in class there is.
#5 BULLETPROOF ONE has gotten two confidence boosters up at Golden Gate Fields for trainer Peter Miller, blitzing open company while setting sizzling fast fractions in a pair of allowance races. She’ll need to figure out a way to beat #3 BEEN STUDYING HER as she has beaten this gal twice in the past. Expect her to wing it on the lead and go for as fast as she can for as long as she can.
#6 SPEEDY GIGI is two-for-two, with a runaway win against maidens at Turf Paradise before an allowance victory at Los Alamitos. But this is a major step up in class.
#7 WARRIOR’S MOON has finished off the board in two career sprint races. Siding with others.
#8 FLORENTINE DIAMOND broke her maiden by open lengths to kick off her career at Los Alamitos in December before two losses against winners on turf. Will be one of the longest shots in the field.
#9 WARREN’S SHOWTIME may be better going a route of ground on turf, where her last two wins, both against stakes company, came. Will try to beat her on the win end.
#10 HOME HOME has lost by large margins in the majority of her races. And although she has visited the winners circle twice, both runs came against lesser company. Not for me.
1. #3 BEEN STUDYING HER – Sprinting is what she does best.
2. #2 BELLA VITA – Expensive daughter of Bayern.
3. #5 BULLETPROOF ONE - In top form again.
LONGSHOT VALUE PLAY - #4 DIM LIGHTS - Daughter of MUNNINGS won easy last time.
I’ll key my top pick over my other three selections in trifectas plus play the speed of the speed as a saver win bet.
BANKROLL PLAY ($50 Budget)
$5 Trifecta: #3 BEEN STUDYING HER over #2 BELLA VITA and #4 DIM LIGHTS and #5 BULLETPROOF ONE ($30).
$20 Win: #5 BULLETPROOF ONE
