The Saturday, May 16 card at Gulfstream Park features three stakes races, including the $100,000 Musical Romance for Florida-breds and the $75,000 Powder Break Stakes topped by the return of Grade 1 winner Got Stormy. The $75,000 Roar Stakes is also on tap.
The Powder Break over a mile on the grass goes as Race 9. #10 Got Stormy has run if Grade 1 company in five of her last six starts. The last time she faced listed foes she won Saratoga’s De La Rose by four lengths. Since then, she defeated males in the Grade 1 Fourstardave, ran second in both the Woodbine Mile (G1) and the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) as the favorite, and scored in the Matriarch (G1) at Del Mar. She missed by a neck in the Frank E Kilroe Mile (G1) at Santa Anita last out.
Perhaps her biggest challenge is Noor Sahara (Ire) on the rail. Chad Brown will unveil the Irish-bred French shipper, who ran in Group 1 company last year and is a stakes winner. The daughter of Lope de Vega (Ire) will be ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr.
The $100,000 Musical Romance has the biggest purse of the day. The seven-furlong main track contest for fillies and mares drew nine, with #7 Lady’s Island favored at 7-5. She’s coming off two straight wins, including a stakes win at Tampa Bay Downs, but more importantly has won 10 of her last 12 and is six for nine on this track.
The $75,000 Roar Stakes for sophomores is a main track sprint that drew six. Green Light Go makes his second start of 2020 here after running third in his comeback, the Grade 3 Swale on February 1. Jimmy Jerkens trains the son of Hard Spun, who won the Saratoga Special (G2) last year and ran second in the Grade 1 Champagne. He won his only start over the distance, and had a sharp half mile work in May 7 at Palm Meadows.
