Race 9 (Saturday, June 6, 2020: 7:30 p.m./ET; 4:30 p.m./PT)
Mile and an eighth on turf (three-year-olds)
Four non-graded stakes races join the fray on Saturday’s Runhappy Santa Anita Derby (G1) program, including the Cinema Stakes, a mile and one-eighth turf event for three-year-olds. Time to handicap to find out who may steal the show:
#1 HEYWOODS BEACH was an all-out winner against turf routing maidens on May 16 and wheels back relatively quickly for John Sadler and owners Hronis Racing LLC. Leading jockey Flavien Prat picks up the amount, which adds to the appeal, but he takes a bump up in class and faces significantly tougher company.
#2 CLUB ASPEN was no match for #7 HARIBOUX in the Pasadena Stakes two starts ago and will need to make up over four lengths on the aforementioned foe. Others are more appealing on the win end.
#3 K P ALL SYSTEMS GO put up a mesmerizing performance when displaying a lethal turn of foot breaking his maiden by six lengths two starts ago (while adding blinkers). He returned against winners and showed the same level of talent while beating #6 LIAR LIAR by a length-and-a-half. Jeff Mullins and red-hot jockey Abel Cedillo team up.
#4 CONSTITUTIONAFFAIR comes off an easy maiden claiming turf win at Golden Gate Fields for trainer Simon Callaghan. Although he won the race by a length-and-three-quarters, he could have won by more. This time around, he faces a whole new level of company and needs to step up his game to be competitive against this much tougher group.
#5 DOMINANT SOUL
races on Lasix for the first time while also debuting against winners in this
spot. This maiden finished three lengths behind #1 HEYWOODS BEACH last month.
#6 LIAR LIAR (IRE) wheels back to the races in just two weeks after a fourth place finish as the favorite in an allowance race. He makes his second start off a two-month break and Baltas wins at a strong 22% win clip with his trainees making their second start off such a rest. Might be able to improve with a race under his belt.
#7 HARIBOUX (GB) completes a strong one-two punch for the Jeff Mullins barn. This gelding last raced on February 29 and won the Pasadena Stakes over next-out Churchill Downs stakes winner SMOOTH LIKE STRAIT. Expect him to sit off the pace and make one run.
1. #3 K P ALL SYSTEMS GO - Will try to get first jump on his stablemate.
2. #7 HARIBOUX - Last win was impressive given who he beat.
3. #1 HEYWOODS BEACH - Recent maiden winner attracts Prat.
LONGSHOT VALUE PLAY-#6 LIAR LIAR - Only lost by a length to our top pick two starts back.
I’ll box all four selections in a trifecta box and bet my remaining $2 to win on my longshot value play.
BANKROLL PLAY ($50 Budget)
