Evening Jewel at Santa Anita: This was the first weekend of live racing at The Great Race Place since Sunday, March 22nd due to the Covid pandemic and despite no fans being allowed on-track, TVG members could still watch & wager on the races, including this one, where SMILING SHIRLEE ($9.60) fought off the tough BELLA VITA, making her first career start on the main track. Personally, I got too caught up on ‘comparative handicapping’ and didn’t give enough credit to SHIRLEE’S last race, where she beat older while earning a career high Beyer Speed Figure of 77. My bad.

Echo Eddie at Santa Anita: Trainer Mark Glatt showed a world of confidence in BIG SWEEP ($4.20) when entering this filly against the boys and he was rewarded when she wore down an ultra-game ROOKIE MISTAKE in the shadow of the wire.

Powder Break at Gulfstream Park: Rain came to South Florida, washing this race off the turf and even though I anticipated that in my handicapping, I made the same mistake here as I did for SMILING SHIRLEE at Santa Anita, specifically not giving her enough credit for earning a career high Beyer Speed Figure in her last start. Lesson learned.

Musical Romance at Gulfstream Park: Good news is I finally cashed my first bet of the afternoon as I recommended playing a $5 exacta using LADY’S ISLAND and WILDWOOD’S BEAUTY (which payed $9.90 for $1).
