Cinema Stakes at Santa Anita: Yes, the field sizes were small all day long at Santa Anita Park, but if you can ‘shapshoot’ your wagers on a day like this, you can still show a nice profit, which is what we did ($190.40, almost doubling our $50 wagering bankroll budget for four races). And that was achieved while still having a loss of $37.60 in this race despite having a winning $2 trifecta play, keyed by the two Jeff Mullins trained three-year-olds running one-two (HARIBOUX, $3.60 and K P ALL SYSTEMS GO).
Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) at Santa Anita: The winner of this race the last two years (Vino Rosso last year and Accelerate in 2018) both went on to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), so let’s see if IMPROBABLE ($4.60) can make it a hat trick this year!
Runhappy Santa Anita Derby (G1) at Santa Anita: With the recent defections of two talented three-year-olds from the Bob Baffert barn (NADAL and CHARLATAN), I put HONOR A.P. ($6.40) at the top of my West Coast contenders list for the Kentucky Derby (G1) and he didn’t disappoint here, easily wearing down AUTHENTIC, who is now pointing to the Haskell (G1) at Monmouth Park next month.
Santa Anita Oaks (G2) at Santa Anita: It’s very rare these days to see a three-year-old filly making just her seventh lifetime start do it at six (!) different tracks, but that’s exactly what SWISS SKYDIVER ($3.20) did in taking down her third consecutive graded stakes victory! Great purchase by her connections for only $35K!
