Sunday’s $125,000 Whimsical Stakes (G3) at Woodbine Racetrack is one of three graded stakes races in North America on the day. The race has a field ten deep that is headed by a pair of rivals, Jean Elizabeth and Summer Sunday. Watch and wager on TVG.com.
Summer Sunday is a six-time winner in eight starts over the track. The daughter of Silent Name has won seven of 11 overall, and is a multiple graded stakes winner here. This is her first start of 2020 for trainer Simon Stuart. Rafael Hernandez will ride as he has in her last five starts. Summer Sunday worked a bullet on the training track here June 5.
Jean Elizabeth, who drew the rail, is the horse that beat Summer Sunday in her last start. Since then, the five-year-old daughter of Adios Charlie has won five in a row to lengthen her streak at seven. She’s won 14 times over all, and has never been worse than third. Larry Rivelli trains the Florida-shipper, who has been working well at Keeneland through a half mile work June 15. She is seven for eight over the track and will be tough to beat.
Aside from the top two comes Alnilah, a Grade 3 winner here over Summer Sunday last August. She has been top two in eight of 14 tries here for trainer Terry Jordan, who took over from Daniel O’Callaghan last summer. Emma Jayne Wilson will ride the six-year-old daughter of Smart Strike.
Woodbine stakes winner Gamble’s Candy is trained by Josie Carroll for Ivan Dalos. The daughter of Twirling Candy is lightly raced with just seven starts, but she has won three of six on this track. She will show speed and try to go with Jean Elizabeth early.
Painting is Carroll’s second hose. She was an allowance winner here last fall before running second in the Grade 2 Bessarabian. That was her last try, she has been off since November 24, but with so many horses making up time from when the track was closed for the pandemic, it is hardly a concern.
Ode to Joy, Western Curl, Charmaine’s Mia, Ellyb, and Foxxy Belle round out the tough field.
