It is the day of the 2020 Belmont Stakes and 6-5 favorite Tiz the Law is taking on nine rivals for the $1 million race over 1 1/8 miles.
Among the numerous contenders facing him is Tap It to Win, a well-bred son of Tapit out of a multiple stakes winning Medaglia d’Oro mare. The Live Oak Stud homebred is trained by Mark Casse, who upset last year’s Belmont Stakes with Sir Winston.
Tap It to Win has won half of his six starts, and is unbeaten on the year. He ran second in his debut at Woodbine, but that was sprinting on the grass. He then broke his maiden at Saratoga on the dirt, scoring by 3 ½ lengths.
He finished off his juvenile season in frustrating fashion, running last in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) after fighting the rider early and then spitting the bit, and last in the Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs. He had some time off and returned with flourish, taking an allowance at Gulfstream Park on May 9 by 1 ½ lengths while going six furlongs on the main track. He rated kindly in that event, swung four wide, and drew off.
Tap It to Win showed a new dimension when sprinting to the lead in a 1 1/16-mile allowance over this track on June 4. He powered away to a five-length score, and although that race was just 16 days ago he has been training well. His last out speed figure is higher than any other horse in the field, including favored Tiz the Law. He will have John Velazquez, a Belmont veteran who has won this race before, in the irons, and is one of only three horses in the ten-horse field with a win over the track.
The Belmont Stakes goes as the 10th in a 12-race card with six stakes races on tap, including the Grade 1 Acorn for three-year-old fillies and the Grade 1 Jaipur for older turf sprinters. First post is at 11:45am Eastern time, 8:45 Pacific. The first stakes is Race 2, the $250,000 Woody Stephens (G2).Check the updated Belmont Stakes odds here.
