Tiz the Law made the delayed 2020 Belmont Stakes worth waiting for when the three-year-old colt opened up to win by 3 ¾ lengths in the 152nd running of the historic race.

Tiz the Law, by Constitution – Tizfiz, by Tiznow, was favored over nine rivals in the 1 1/8-mile race, shortened from 1 ½ miles for the 2020 running. Ridden by Manny Franco, Tiz the Law sat third early behind the pace set by Tap It to Win on the rail and Fore Left. He pounced rounding the far turn and drew away to an impressive victory.

Tiz the Law ($3.60) is trained by Barclay Tagg for the Sackatoga Stable, who came to the Belmont in 2003 with Funny Cide and a shot at the Triple Crown. Funny Cide finished third that year, but Tiz the Law eased that memory with his win. Now he will head for the Travers Stakes (G1) on August 8, then the Kentucky Derby (G1) September 5, and the Preakness Stakes (G1) on October 3.

Dr Post finished second, with Max Player rallying from ninth to be third. Pneumatic rounded out the superfecta, which paid $55.65 for ten cents. The trifecta paid $49.75.

The final time was 1:46.53.

While Tiz the Law’s win was textbook, perhaps the most staggering victory of the day was Gamine’s romp in the $300,000 Acorn Stakes (G1). Under jockey John Velazquez, the Into Mischief filly Gamine was 10 lengths clear at the head of the stretch and crushed by 18 ¾ lengths over 39- 1 Pleasant Orb and 33 – 1 Water White. The 1:32.55 final time for the mile was a new stakes record, and increased her record to three for three.

The day’s other Grade 1, the $250,000 Jaipur for sprinters on the grass, went to the mare Oleksandra by a neck over the comebacking Kanthaka, who had been away from the races for 13 months. Oleksandra was eighth halfway through the race, but under Joel Rosario ran swiftly on the outside to get up at the wire. Texas Wedge finished third.

The next leg of the unusual 2020 Triple Crown is the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs September 5. Watch TVG for updates on the road to the Derby.
