The $50,000 Minnesota Turf Distaff Stakes is part of a four-stakes program at Canterbury Park on July 1. The 7 ½ furlong turf contest goes as Race 5, and drew a field of nine with one also eligible.
Clickbait (6-1) drew the rail. The four-year-old daughter of Lovango has made just three starts to date, scoring twice here last season before being off from September until April 20, when she ran second with a career best speed figure at Oaklawn Park. She was 10 – 1 that day after going favored in both Canterbury wins, but offers plenty of value here if the McLean Robertson trainee stays around 6 – 1.
The 8-5 choice is stablemate Ready to Runaway. She is coming off a stakes win here June 17 in the Lady Slipper, and is a four-time stakes winner over the track. The daughter of First Dude has never been worse than third, and has won half her 12 starts. This will be her first try on the grass after being such a standout on the main track.
Honey’s Sox Appeal (7-2) drew outside. She was fifth in this race last year behind First Hunter, who is back for more today. She is the third of the Robertson entries, and is a winner over the course, but has yet to score at the distance.
First Hunter (15-1) has run on this turf course 21 times, with seven wins, five seconds, and six thirds. She is the defending champion here but her only win since then was a cheaper race at Turf Paradise last November. She was third here June 17 in allowance company, and is now trained by David Van Winkle.
Maywood Hope (6-1) is the horse that beat her in that allowance race. That was over a mile, but Maywood Hope has an affinity for this course with three wins and two seconds in five tries. She was second in this race last year, and is multiple stakes placed while seeking her first stakes win.
The $50,000 Frances Genter Stakes is Race 3, followed by the $50,000 Victor S. Myers Stakes. The $50,000 Ralph Strangis Stakes is the final stake on a 10-race program, going as Race 6. Watch and wager with TVG.
