The Saturday feature at Del Mar is the $65,000 Wickerr Stakes for older horses going one mile on the grass. The field of nine are evenly matched on paper.
#1 Kiwi’s Dream (3-1) makes his Del Mar debut after being second in a pair of stakes at Golden Gate Fields. The Australian-bred son of Sebring has won five of 13 lifetime, and has been top three 10 times. Both of his last two losses were by a head, and his speed figures fit with this group. Victor Trujillo trains.
#3 Jasikan (8-1) was a stakes winner over this trip last year when he took the Oceanside by a nose. He then finished third in the La Jolla (G3) on August 4, but has been away since then. He was in the John Sadler barn until a month ago, when he was transferred to Juan Leyva, Sadler’s former assistant.
#4 Voodoo Song (4-1) is a Grade 1 winner and a New York-bred champion. In his first two starts in California for new trainer Richard Mandella, the six-year-old son of English Channel has failed to hit the board, but he is a near millionaire. Drayden Van Dyke will ride.
#6 Bolo (5-1) is a popular Grade 1 winning gelding. He was good enough to run in the Kentucky Derby in 2015, but has since found a home on turf. He hasn’t won since taking the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita over a year ago, but he did break his maiden on the turf here in 2014. Carla Gaines trains the son of Temple City.
#9 Big Score (7-2) rounds out the top contenders. He has been top three in four of seven starts on this course. The Tim Yakteen-trainee by Mr. Big won in January, 2019, then was off until October of that year when he finished fifth, beaten just a half-length, in Grade 2 company. He has been off since then; gaps in his races are common. He has been first or second eight times. Abel Cedillo will ride.
New Year, Bob and Jackie, Souter, and Murad Khan round out the field. Watch and wager on all the summer action with TVG and on TVG.com.
