The feature race of the Wednesday card at Saratoga in New York is the $85,000 Dayatthespa Stakes for older fillies and mares going 1 1/16 miles on the grass. The race drew War Canoe from the Chad Brown barn and Classic Lady and Wegetsdamunnys from the Christophe Clement outfit.
#1 War Canoe (8-5) was claimed by Brown two starts back in a winning effort at Aqueduct. She was off from November 15 until July 2, when she ran third in stakes company at Belmont Park over a mile. She is a winner over the course and has been top three in her last five tries.
#4 Classic Lady (7-5) has never been worse than third here but still seeks her first win. Joel Rosario will ride the first of the Clement runners, this one by Jimmy Creed who missed by a nose in the Mt Vernon at Belmont last out; that’s the same race where War Canoe was third off the layoff. Classy Lady has also never been worse than third at the distance; it has been 15 months since she was last worse than second.
#2 Wegetsdamunnys (7-2) is the second Clement runner, this one to be ridden by David Cohen. The daughter of D’ Funnybone is a five-year-old who won over nine furlongs at Belmont June 12, then finished seventh in stakes company over 12 furlongs there a month later. That was probably too far; the cut back in distance will help.
#3 Love and Love (2-1) is entered for Main Track Only, but will be the choice if the race switches to dirt. She has won her last two starts, and won here last year on an off track race by four lengths. Michael Miceli trains the daughter of Goldencents, who will be ridden by Dylan Davis.
#7 Vortex Road (8-1) rounds out the top choices. She has been second in her last three starts, missing by a nose over nine furlongs last out behind Wegetsdamunnys. Bruce Levine trains the Quality Road daughter.
