$150,000 TVG.Com Pegasus at Monmouth Park on Race 10 (Saturday, August 15, 2020: 5:12 p.m./ET; 2:12 p.m./PT) Mile and a sixteenth on the main track (three-year-olds)
A dozen races are sprinkled throughout the Monmouth Park this Saturday and the marquee event on the card, the TVG.Com Pegasus, features a pair of Grade I placed three-year-old colts and another colt who was last seen competing in the first leg of the Triple Crown this year, the Belmont (G1). Let’s dig in to the past performances and take a closer look:
#1 SKYSCANNER adds blinkers for trainer Jeremiah O’Dwyer, who scores at 8% with first time blinkers. Son of BERNARDINI was last seen losing by a head in an allowance race at Delaware. Last year, he finished a neck behind #2 BIG CITY ROB for the win in the Sapling Stakes over this track. On paper, it looks like others are faster and more appealing. Pass.
#2 BIG CITY BOB makes his first start off a five-month layoff for trainer Juan Duarte Jr., who wins at a 26% clip with his trainees making their first start between 61-180 days. As a two-year-old, he finished third behind TIZ THE LAW in the Champagne (G1) at Belmont Park. He ran at Monmouth Park as a two-year-old and went two-for-two over the local strip. Certainly a possibility.
#3 WARTIME HERO broke his maiden for $50K at Keeneland and was claimed out of the race by trainer Hugh McMahon, who wins at an 18% clip with first-off-the-claim acquisitions. His other two-career races resulted in a pair of off the board finishes. Will likely go off at a price.
#4 SUPER JOHN makes his second start off a seven-month layoff, after finishing second in an allowance event at Delaware, a race which was likely a prep run for this spot. He was well beaten in the Sapling Stakes at Monmouth last year as a two-year-old, finishing 15 lengths behind #2 BIG CITY BOB, which is a concern. That said, his two most recent races indicate he has gotten significantly better since last year’s debacle over this track. Mixed feelings.
#5 PNEUMATIC drops in class significantly after a fourth-place finish in the Belmont (G1) behind TIZ THE LAW. His two-back run, a third-place finish in the Matt Winn (G3), was a better than looked effort behind Grade I winner MAXFIELD. No doubt he is the class of the race, which makes him the one to beat.
#6 ARKAAN is an undefeated son of INTO MISCHEIF that looks to win his third race in a row while routing for the first time. After an easy maiden win at Parx sprinting, he returned to win by a half-dozen lengths at Delaware Park against allowance foes. He has always been well regarded, having been purchased as a yearling by owners Shadwell Stable for $450,000. Out of an UNBRIDLED’S SONG mare, he should be able to route just fine for a trainer who wins at 24% when stretching his horses from sprints to routes.
#7 AS SEEN ON TV hit the board in a pair of stakes, the Mucho Macho Man and Fountain of Youth (G2), at Gulfstream Park over the winter. After those two solid efforts, he ran extremely poorly in the Florida Derby (G1) and was put on the sidelines for four-and-a-half months. He faces legit graded stakes foes in this event, but his highest Beyer Speed Figure (98) is certainly good enough to win this race, though that try came going a one-turn mile at Gulfstream Park.
#8 JESUS’ TEAM was no match for AUTHENTIC, NY TRAFFIC and DR. POST while finishing fourth in the Haskell (G1) last month over this track. His last two efforts, both routing, produced Beyer Speed Figures (94 and 90) that stack up with some of the better foes in this race, plus he gets leading Monmouth jockey Paco Lopez in the irons.
1. #5 PNEUMATIC - Looks like he’s found a good spot.
2. #6 ARKAAN - Well-bred colt is worthy of a second look.
3. #7 AS SEEN ON TV - Best race makes him a very serious contender.
LONGSHOT VALUE PLAY - #8 JESUS’ TEAM – Fourth in the Haskell (G1).
I’ll box my top three picks in an exacta, then key my top pick over my top two selections plus my longshot value play selection in a trifecta and place my remaining $2 on a $1 saver trifecta.
