The 2020 Kentucky Derby is just nine days away, with the top contenders arriving at Churchill Downs. Two of the longshots in the race are Dr Post and Finnick the Fierce. Do their pedigrees suggest they can go the Derby distance?
Dr Post’s sire Quality Road was the buzz horse of the stallion world when he sired Eclipse Champion Abel Tasman, Pegasus World Cup Invitational winner City of Light, and millionaires Bellafina and Caledonia Road in his early seasons at stud. Last year he had Grade 1 winner Dunbar Road to his name as well. Dr Post will try to become his first Kentucky Derby winner on September 5.
Dr Post’s graded stakes winning dam, Mary Delaney, won six times and earned over $305,000. The daughter of Hennessy was a Grade 2 winner at Keeneland in 2007. She brought as much as $850,000 as a broodmare, and quickly produced rich Grade 3 runner Cosmic Shore.
Dr Post has won two of his five starts. The dark bay colt won over 1 1/16 miles at Gulfstream Park April 25 in the Unbridled Stakes after breaking his maiden at that track on March 29. Since then, the $400,000 yearling was second in the Belmont Stakes (G1) and third in the TVG Haskell (G1).
Finnick the Fierce
A popular win would come from Finnick the Fierce, who only has one eye. The chestnut son of Dialed In was seventh in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) in July, and third in an allowance race at Churchill Downs. He was also third in the Arkansas Derby after winning an Oaklawk Park allowance via the disqualification of another Derby runner, Winning Impression.
Dialed In ran eighth in the Kentucky Derby in 2011 after winning the Florida Derby (G1). Finnick the Fierce is out of the Southern Image mare Southern Classic, who broke her maiden by five lengths sprinting and ultimately won two sprints in her short career. Damsire Southern Image won the 2004 Santa Anita Handicap (G1) over 1 ¼ miles, meaning Finnick the Fierce might be able to get the distance.
