The 2020 Kentucky Oaks is to be run Friday, September 4, with a purse of $1,250,000 on the line. A field of nine three-year-old fillies has been entered, and the Oaks tops a day of fantastic racing with six total graded stakes races on tap.
Race 8 - $300,000 Eight Belles Stakes (G2)
#1 Mundaye Call (6-5) is coming off three straight wins for trainer Brad Cox, including a stakes race across the state over seven furlongs (today’s distance). #7 Four Graces (7-5) will be tough to catch winging on the front end after consecutive Grade 3 victories, including one over this trip in June for trainer Ian Wilkes.
Race 9 - $300,000 Edgewood Stakes (G2)
#8 Walk In Marrakesh (6-1) will try to upset a heavy favorite with an outside draw here. The Irish-bred is coming off a nose loss in a Grade 2 at Keeneland, and is Grade 1 placed from last year. #3 Sharing (6-5) returns from Royal Ascot for Graham Motion. The daughter of Speightstown was second there after winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) last year.
Race 10 - $400,000 Alysheba Stakes (G2)
#6 By My Standards (7-5) won three in a row including a pair of Grade 2 races earlier this year, then ran second in the Stephen Foster (G2) here in June. He then ran second in the Grade 1 Whitney at Saratoga, beaten two lengths. #2 McKinzie (8-5) is the defending champion and earner of $3.4 million.
Race 11 - $500,000 La Troienne Stakes (G1)
#8 Monomoy Girl (4-5) has won two major races here, the Kentucky Oaks (G1) in 2018 and the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (g1). She was off for a year and a half but is unbeaten in her return and has won 11 of 13 starts. #6 She’s a Julie (6-1) is a Grade 1 winner here and the defending champion; she has won three of seven starts at Churchill Downs.
Race 12 - $1,250,000 Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1)
All eyes will be on the two titans, but #4 Speech (5-1) has an upset chance after winning the Ashland with a career best speed figure and really improving of late. #1 Swiss Skydiver (8-5) has won four major stakes already this year. #3 Donna Veloce (15-1) could clean up the superfecta.
Race 13 - $250,000 Twin Spires Turf Sprint Stakes (G2)
#4 Bound for Nowhere (3-1) has never been worse than third at the distance with two wins, and has been a major player in the division for the last three years. #3 Real News (10-1) can sit off the pace and make a run.
