Shedaresthedevil upset the 2020 Longines Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on Friday, September 4. The three-year-old filly was 15-1 and defeated Swiss Skydiver and Gamine in what was expected to be an epic duel between the top two wagering choices.
Shedaresthedevil ($32.20) sat in second off pacesetter Gamine, the odds-on favorite, early on. Swiss Skydiver was settled in third, and tried to go inside Gamine down the backstretch but the hole was closed, with Gamine maintaining her lead. Shedaresthedevil took over the lead in the stretch when Gamine couldn’t run on, and Swiss Skydiver rallied three-wide but couldn’t get by. Shedaresthedevil won by 1 1/2 lengths.
The daughter of Daredevil, who sired the Kentucky Oaks exacta, is trained by Brad Cox for Flurry Racing Stables LLC, Qatar Racing Limited, and Big Aut Farms. Florent Geroux was aboard; Cox and Geroux wno the 2018 Oaks with Monomoy Girl, who won the 2020 La Troienne (G1) 45 minutes before the Kentucky Oaks.
Grade 1 winner Speech finished fourth, while dual Grade 1 placed Donna Veloce finished eighth in a nine-horse field after traffic trouble early. The final time, 1:48.28, was the fastest in Kentucky Oaks history at the 1 1/8-mile distance.
The winner’s share of the $1.25 million purse pushed Shedaresthedevil’s earnings to $1,245,768. She has five wins, two seconds, and two thirds in 10 starts.
Earlier this year, Shedaresthedevil won both the Honeybee Stakes (G3) and Indiana Oaks (G3). Last year on the Southern California circuit she was Grade 2 stakes placed at Del Mar, and stakes placed at Santa Anita.
