The 146th running of the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) went to Authentic, the third choice in a field of 15 horses.
8-1 Authentic ($18.80) went to the lead early from the outside gate under jockey John Velazquez, and controlled the pace while pressed by Storm the Court while favorite Tiz the Law sat fourth early. Second choice Honor A. P. was bumped by Ny Traffic at the start and was second last early, well behind the leaders. The first quarter went in :22.92 and the half was :46.41.
Rounding the far turn, Authentic was challenged by Tiz the Law under Manuel Franco, while 46-1 shot Mr. Big News made a strong move to come up into third. Tiz the Law and Authentic battled down the stretch, with Authentic finding another gear and putting away the big favorite, who had previously won the Belmont Stakes (G1) and Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1). Authentic won by a length and a quarter over Tiz the Law, with Mr. Big News third and Honor A. P. rallying for fourth. The final time was 2:00.61.
The win was the sixth in the Kentucky Derby for trainer Bob Baffert, who had his second entrant, Thousand Words, scratched in the paddock when that runner flipped over, breaking the arm of assistant trainer Jimmy Barnes. Baffert has tied the all-time record for most Kentucky Derby wins by a trainer, while jockey Velazquez has won three since 2011 (Animal Kingdom, Always Dreaming).
Authentic is by Into Mischief and out of the Mr. Greeley mare Flawless. He is owned by Spendthrift Farm, MyRacehorse Stable, Madaket Stables, and Starlight Racing.
Attention will now turn to the 2020 Preakness Stakes, originally scheduled for the third Saturday in May but now slated for October 3 at Pimlico Racecourse in Maryland. Like the Kentucky Derby, it will be run without fans. Stay tuned to TVG for updates on which Kentucky Derby runners will head to the Preakness.
