A field of six two-year-olds will contest the $250,000 Del Mar Futurity (G1), the highlight of the closing day Monday card at Del Mar. Four of the six runners are highly regarded maidens, with the two winners at 8-5 and 6-1.
#1 Spielberg (2-1) is a $1 million purchase trained by Bob Baffert, who has a record number of wins in this race. The son of Union Rags was second as a heavy favorite on debut here August 8 going six furlongs. He was defeated by 8-5 choice Dr. Schivel, and has come back with two quick works of late. Abel Cedillo will ride.
#2 Dyn O Mite (12-1) is a longshot for trainer Keith Desormeaux. He has been second in all three of his starts, including a one-mile turf race here July 25, where he missed by a half-length. That might ultimately be the game for the son of Goldencents, who was beaten more than three lengths in both his dirt sprint races. Victor Espinoza will ride.
#3 Weston (6-1) is unbeaten for trainer Ryan Hanson. A $7,000 yearling, he broke his maiden first out at Santa Anita in June, then won the Best Pal (G2) here by a neck at 5-1 in August. Drayden Van Dyke will be back aboard the son of Hit It a Bomb, who has done nothing wrong to date and has a bullet workout August 18.
#4 Scooby (12-1) is a Jerry Hollendorfer entrant who was stakes placed in his debut August 2 here. The California-bred then ran second in a one-mile maiden race on the grass, but switches back to the main track here in deep waters.
#5 Dixie’s Two Stents (3-1) is a son of Quality Road trained by Doug O’Neill. The $60,000 weanling was second in his debut, missing by just a head, here on August 1. He was beaten by a well regarded colt that day and gets more room to work with under Mario Gutierrez.
#6 Dr. Schivel (8-5) was a nearly six-length maiden winner over Spielberg here August 8. That was his third start; it took three tries to break his maiden but he has improved with every stretch out and has never been worse than third. Flavien Prat will ride the son of Violence.
