The field for the 2020 Preakness Stakes is taking shape, with Ny Traffic added and Robby Albarado named on the top filly Swiss Skydiver. Jockeys are committing to mounts despite a shortage of top riders around the nation.

On October 3, the day of the Preakness, there are 11 graded stakes races at Belmont Park, Santa Anita Park, and Keeneland, meaning that quarantine restrictions and lucrative purses are keeping some of the best jockeys home. That is why Robby Albarado has picked up the mount on Grade 1 winning filly Swiss Skydiver, as Tyler Gaffalione will stay in Kentucky.

Ny Traffic became the 12th likely entrant on Sunday, with the gray son of Cross Traffic turning in a :48 flat workout at Churchill Downs. He finished eighth in the Kentucky Derby for trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr.

The 2020 Preakness undercard has 11 stakes races, including the $250,000 Black Eyed Susan Stakes (G2), the $250,000 Dinner Party Stakes (G2), the $200,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash (G3), $150,000 Miss Preakness Stakes, and the $150,000 Gallorette (G3). The day is topped by the $1 million Preakness Stakes (G1), a Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In event for the $6 million Classic.

The Preakness field will be drawn Monday, September 28, at 9am Eastern.

Kentucky Derby winner Authentic, who has only been beaten once in his career, is the expected choice in a field that includes Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) hero Art Collector, Country Grammer, Excession, Jesus’ Team, Liveyourbeastlife, Max Player, Mr. Big News, Pneumatic, and Thousand Words.

Mr. Big News was third in the Derby as a 46-1 shot, while Max Player finished fifth. Country Grammer won the Peter Pan (G3) at Saratoga, then ran fifth in the Travers. The son of Tonalist is trained by Chad Brown, who trained Cloud Computing to win the Preakness in 2017.

Thousand Words was slated to run in the Kentucky Derby, but reared up in the paddock and flipped over, causing his scratch from the race. Stay tuned to TVG for all the latest Preakness updates, including the draw and undercard information.
