Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Authentic completed his final workout for the 2020 Preakness Stakes on Monday, September 28 at Churchill Downs. He will now ship to Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore for the third leg of the 2020 Triple Crown.
Authentic, by Into Mischief – Flawless, by Mr. Greeley, worked at 7:30 am under jockey Martin Garcia, who often works horses for trainer Bob Baffert. Authentic breezed a half mile in :47.60 and looked happy with his ears up, striding out over the Churchill surface. He then continued to gallop out and clocked five furlongs in a minute flat, going six furlongs in 1:13.40.
After spending Saturday at Santa Anita Park, Baffert was on hand in Louisville for the workout. Authentic will fly to Baltimore on Tuesday, along with other local Preakness contenders such as Mr. Big News and Max Player.
The only horse to ever beat Authentic, who is now five for six lifetime with $2.8 million in earnings, is Honor A. P. That rival has since been retired and is taking up stallion duties at Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky.
The post position draw for the Preakness Stakes is on Monday at 12pm Eastern. That is also when the 2020 Preakness Stakes morning line odds will be announced. A field of 12 is expected, with the Grade 1 winning filly Swiss Skydiver taking on not only Authentic, but 2020 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) hero Art Collector, who missed the Kentucky Derby due to a hoof injury.
A whopping 11 stakes races are expected for the Preakness undercard. Stay tuned to TVG for all the latest Preakness updates.
