Trainer Cherie DeVaux is still seeking the first stakes winner of her young career, and has a big shot with 9-2 Our Super Freak in the Falls City Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs on Thanksgiving day. The $200,000 Falls City, a nine-furlong contest for fillies and mares, drew a field of nine. The famous race, a Thanksgiving weekend staple, has produced winners such as Blue Prize, Tomisues Delight, and Indian Vale.
Our Super Freak has been multiped stakes placed this year. She won the 2019 Shine Again under trainer Jamie Ness before changing barns this winter, and ran third in both the Molly Pitcher (g3) and Shuvee (G3) before trying Grade 1 company at Keeneland. Gabriel Saez will ride the daughter of Mineshaft, who has been working across town at the Churchill Training Center.
Her main competition comes from Bonny South, and from Envoutante (5-2) on the rail. The Ken McPeek trainee won the Remington Park Oaks (G3) impressively last out. The daughter of Uncle Mo was Grade 1 placed at Keeneland in July, and won an allowance here in May over 1 1/16 miles. Brian Hernandez, Jr. will ride.
Bonny South drew stall three. The Grade 1 placed, Grade 2 winner hails from the Brad Cox barn and will be a heavy choice in here. She was second by just a neck in the Black Eyed Susan at Pimlico last out. Florent Geroux will be aboard the daughter of Munnings, who debuted here a year ago and finished fourth. She finished just three and a half lengths behind Swiss Skydiver in August.
Smooth With a Kick is 5-1 for Chad Brown. The daughter of Candy Ride is coming off two wins in her last three starts, including an allowance at Keeneland last out. She has yet to run at Churchill Downs, but is two for three at the distance. Tyler Gaffalione will be aboard the $650,000 purchase.
