Horse racing is an illustrious sport that dates back to almost 4500 BC. Today, it is amongst the most widely attended spectator sports in the United States, with Thoroughbred races usually running between ¾ and 1 ¼ miles.

Horse racing flourished until the early 1900s, when bookmaking was nearly banned in major horseracing nations, diminishing the number of tracks down to the low point of 25 by 1906.
