About Saratoga Race Track

Based in Saratoga Springs, New York, the Saratoga Race Track is the oldest organized sporting venue of any kind in the United States. John Hunter, who became the first chairman of The Jockey Club, and William R. Travers built the horse racing track in 1864, which has since played host to Travers Stakes, the oldest major Thoroughbred competition in the United States. Originally, Travers Stakes consisted of only four days. But over time it has lengthened. Today, it lasts six weeks, with races closing on Labor Day.

Saratoga Race Track History

The Saratoga Race Track is steeped in history and tradition. In fact, Sports Illustrated rated it as the number 10 sports venue of the 20th Century in 1999. Saratoga has two popular nicknames – The Spa, named for the nearby mineral springs, and the Graveyard of Favorites, named for the historic upsets recorded there in years past. Perhaps most notable is Man o' War’s only defeat in 21 starts and Secretariat’s loss to The Onion after winning the Triple Crown.
