2023 Breeders’ Cup Distaff

Longines Distaff

Updated November 1, 2023

  • Post Time: 5:10pm ET

  • Purse: $2,000,000

  • Distance: 1 1/8 miles

  • Grade: 1

  • Age: 3-year-old+ fillies & mares

The Breeders’ Cup Distaff is another of the original races of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, first run in 1984. Despite the rich Filly & Mare Turf and the Juvenile Fillies for younger horses, this is the premier female Thoroughbred racing event of the entire season, and the most prestigious female dirt race anywhere in the world.

Although it’s limited to female horses, basically a fillies’ and mares’ complement to the Breeders’ Cup Classic, this is a high-quality race, one that certain top trainers have excelled at preparing their charges for over the years. Bill Mott, Brad Cox, and John Shirreffs have done well in this race in the past, as well as the country’s most successful trainer, Steve Asmussen.

Breeders’ Cup Distaff Contenders

As you start handicapping this year’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff, these are the leading contenders for the race:

Adare Manor - Trainer: Bob Baffert - Sire: Uncle Mo

She has been the clear leader of the West Coast distaff division, and carries a five-win streak into the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. She has won her last four with authority, including the 1 ⅛-mile Santa Margarita (G2). And, she showed in the Clement Hirsch (G1) that she can stalk and pounce. The question is strength of schedule, as none of the fields she faced out west are as deep as the group invading her backyard for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

Clairiere - Trainer: Steve Asmussen - Sire: Curlin

She is a closer, which isn’t usually the best running style at Santa Anita, though the way this race sets up she should get a fair shake, if not an ultimately advantageous one. Even though she comes off of a flat race in the Personal Ensign Stakes (G1), she did last year as well. Steve Asmussen freshened her up, got her ready, and let her fire her best in the final race of her four-year-old campaign. It would be no surprise if she does the same at five, and she belongs in exotics.

Desert Dawn - Trainer: Phil D’Amato - Sire: Cupid

A win would be a serious surprise, since she has spent the year picking up second- and third-place finishes behind Adare Manor in short fields. However, her consistency and her ability to run on late, combined with her familiarity with the racetrack, make her an interesting price horse to sprinkle at the bottom of trifecta and superfecta tickets.

Idiomatic - Trainer: Brad Cox - Sire: Curlin

The breakout star of the distaff division, she has won her last four races. Her last two, the Spinster (G1) and the Personal Ensign (G1), came against the strongest company compared to the rest of the field. She set the pace in those races, which raises a question. However, she was able to overcome stumbling at the start three back in the Delaware Handicap (G2), rally late, and win. This means she should be able to sit off if the pace goes off the rails.

Pretty Mischievous - Trainer: Brendan Walsh - Sire: Into Mischief

This year’s Kentucky Oaks winner, she kept shining in the three-year-old division this year over both one and two turns. Now, she returns to the distance of her most impressive race yet, the Kentucky Oaks. She should get a sharp pace to rally into yet does not have to settle too far back, something important given how Santa Anita plays. She will be a price compared to the older horses, but looks like the most likely upsetter to Idiomatic.

Randomized - Trainer: Chad Brown - Sire: Nyquist

She has won two straight graded stakes by open lengths, the Alabama (G1) against sophomores and the Beldame (G2) against older. However, she faces an even deeper field for this, and the pace flow suits her poorly. In a race with so much speed drawn in, she is even more likely than stablemate Search Results to get completely burned by the early fractions.

Search Results - Trainer: Chad Brown - Sire: Flatter

She was part of a wicked pace in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff last year, flattening to sixth in the lane. The problem for her is, the pace looks likely to set up similarly sharp this time around, and against classy horses, she does her best work on or very close to the lead. She moves up if a speed bias emerges through the Breeders’ Cup races, but otherwise, be ready to bet against her.
