2023 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

Updated November 1, 2023

  • Race Date: November 4th, 2022

  • Post Time: 6:20 p.m. ET

  • Purse: $1,000,000

  • Distance: 1 mile

  • Grade: 1

  • Age: 2-year-old fillies

The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf was first staged at Santa Anita Park in 2008 as an ungraded race. It earned a Grade 2 rating in 2010, was promoted to the top level in 2014, and is perennially America’s best race for juvenile fillies on the grass. This year, it happens at a mile over the California firm turf at Santa Anita Park.

Trainer Chad Brown has been strong in this race, winning five of its 14 runnings so far. However, a wide range of trainers has made their mark in this race. Unlike the Juvenile Turf, which so often goes to international raiders, North American-based horses tend to do better in the Juvenile Fillies Turf: only two overseas horses have ever won.

Selecting Your Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Bets

Finding contenders with a reasonable amount of stamina in their breeding could be the way to go. As always, read the form very carefully, as when one filly wins by five lengths, and another is beaten into second, that doesn’t automatically make the former better than the latter in the context of this race. Perhaps the ground was to their liking and won't be, or perhaps the race shape meant that a horse either got loose on an easy lead or had to face an unusually contested front end.

Check the fillies that all the top contenders have been racing against to see what they’ve each achieved, and you can build up a pattern showing who you think has a great shot at the prize.

Here at TVG, we can keep you on track with regular information on all races as we approach post time at Keeneland in all of this year’s Breeders’ Cup races.

2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Contenders

The main contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf include:

Buchu - Trainer: Philip Bauer - Sire: Justify

It took her four wins to shed her maiden label, but she looks like a horse who is thriving with both racing and the stretch out to two turns. She closed from near the rear to win the Jessamine (G2) at Keeneland, though in her maiden win two starts ago, she was able to win from closer to the pace. This versatility should serve her well, especially on the cut back to a flat mile.

Carla’s Way - Trainer: Simon Crisford - Sire: Starspangledbanner

She takes the next step up in distance after a pair of six-furlong outings and a pair of seven-furlong tries. She impressed in the Rockfel (G2) at Newmarket last out, prompting the pace before taking over. However, she will have to prove that she can either keep up close with American speed early or close from a bit further back. If she can, she could be live.

Gala Brand - Trainer: Bill Mott - Sire: Violence

She broke her maiden sprinting on the grass at Saratoga, then beat males in the With Anticipation (G2). Both of those wins came with late-running flair. She closed in the Miss Grillo (G2) at Aqueduct a month ago, but had to settle for fourth that day. Trainer Bill Mott does not typically press on after a race like that unless the horse is ready to face top-level company, suggesting that the Miss Grillo might just be an aberration that boosts a live Gala Brand’s price.

Hard to Justify - Trainer: Chad Brown - Sire: Justify

Trainer Chad Brown has a strong history in this race. This year, his entrant has not been as dazzling so far as other winners like Lady Eli or Newspaperofrecord, but she also has yet to do anything truly wrong. She has started twice, both times at 1 1/16 miles, and both times won by narrow margins. One of those wins came from a stalking spot and the other came closing late after some midrace trouble, meaning she has the maturity to handle this big field.

Laulne - Trainer: Phil D’Amato - Sire: Starspangledbanner

Now trained by West Coast-based Phil D’Amato, she made her first six starts in France and has not finished worse than third. Her last three starts came in Group-level company at Metropolitan tracks, and one of those was a Group 3 win at seven furlongs. The ground is a question, as she has only ever raced over soft or heavy footing. But, her pedigree suggests she should improve on the stretch out to a mile, and the price should be square.

Porta Fortuna - Trainer: Donnacha O’Brien - Sire: Caravaggio

The class of the field, she comes into the Breeders’ Cup off a victory in the Cheveley Park (G1) at Newmarket. It was a strong enough win to show that she has trained on from her precocious start: she won her first three, including the Albany (G3) at Royal Ascot, but lost a pair in the late summer. However, the price will be short, and the question is whether the Breeders’ Cup is just one race too many after that British Group 1 triumph.

She Feels Pretty - Trainer: Cherie DeVaux - Sire: Karakontie

She cedes experience to most of the field, with only two starts behind her. That said, she overcame a less-than-perfect start last out, so things haven’t gone perfectly her way in her short career so far. She also has yet to try two turns: she did rally to win the Natalma (G1) at Woodbine to earn a berth in the Breeders’ Cup, though that came at one turn over Woodbine’s sweeping outer turf course.
