2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint

Updated November 1, 2023

  • Post Time: 2:00 p.m PDT

  • Purse: $1,000,000

  • Distance: 5 ½ furlongs

  • Grade: 1

  • Age: 2-year-olds

Despite only being on the calendar since 2018, this is one of the newer championship races, but its importance is not lost on trainers, jockeys, and owners.

Just as all new stakes races, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint began its life ungraded, but it has risen meteorically in importance as a stronger juvenile turf sprint division has been built in the United States. It is now a Grade 1 race worth a million dollars, and it attracts top turf sprinters from all over the world. Its 2020 winner, Golden Pal, continued to shine in the turf sprint division at ages three and four, cementing the importance of this race.

Selecting Your Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Bets

Given how new this race is, making an informed decision when placing a bet on the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint can be difficult. The race is being run over a flat five furlongs, so looking at horses who can shorten up that far is a good first start. After all, five-furlong speed is different from six-furlong speed or even five-and-a-half-furlong speed. Looking at the pace can also be a good guide; with a lot of speed entered in the 2023 edition, horses coming from off the pace can get a good run.

We have information on Breeders’ Cup contenders and much more besides to help you pick out your Juvenile Turf Sprint bet.

2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Contenders

Heading into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, these are the horses to watch. They include favorites, as well as some price horses who should be able to make an impact.

Amidst Waves - Trainer: George Weaver - Sire: Midshipman

He was nosed out in the Indian Summer, but would have won the race had he not had to alter behind traffic down the lane. The longest-priced of a strong trio from the George Weaver barn, he should get a good run into the speed from a good draw, and he is tactical enough to be in range even over the super-short five-furlong distance.

Big Evs - Trainer: Michael Appleby - Sire: Blue Point

The likely favorite, he was well bet against older in the Nunthorpe (G1) two back. He was well beaten by Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint morning-line favorite Live In the Dream that day, but bounced back to romp in the Flying Childers (G2) next out. He is the class of the overseas shippers, though he is one of many speed horses in the field and will be underlaid as a result.

Committee of One - Trainer: Steve Asmussen - Sire: Mendelssohn

He beat Amidst Waves by a nose in the Indian Summer at Keeneland, rallying from off a sharp pace. The pace flow should favor him in the Juvenile Turf Sprint as well. The biggest question for him is the distance. He has never shortened up to the flat five furlongs, and horses with experience at such a short trip may get the jump. Still, the price should be right to include him in plays.

Crimson Advocate - Trainer: George Weaver - Sire: Nyquist

The likely shortest-priced of the George Weaver set, Crimson Advocate makes her first start since June, when she won the Queen Mary (G2) at Royal Ascot. She won both that and the Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies over a flat five furlongs on the grass, which plays in her favor. But, it’s hard to know how she has developed, and she will have to send hard from the rail inside of a lot of other speed.

No Nay Mets - Trainer George Weaver - Sire: No Nay Never

He was a no-show at Royal Ascot for George Weaver, but has been razor-sharp in two starts since, back in the States. He wired the five-furlong Tyro at Monmouth, and then got the same kind of trip in the Rosie’s going 5 ½ furlongs at Colonial. The fact that he battled on the pace in the Rosie’s is a plus, though he drew relatively inside and will have to fight as hard as ever at a short price.

Shards - Trainer: Kelsey Danner - Sire: Bucchero

He is the third who comes out of the Indian Summer, which looks like a likely key race for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. Like Committee of One and the troubled Amidst Waves, Shards rallied from well off the pace, finishing third but finishing only a neck short. Like Committee of One, the cut back to five furlongs is a question, but he has the quality and the favorable pace flow.

Slider - Trainer: John Sadler - Sire: Jimmy Creed

Among the speed horses, he is the most appealing. He won the Speakeasy over the same course and distance as the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, so the distance should fit. And, though he has speed, he has been able to run from a close-stalking trip as well as a contested pace. That means he has the fight to overcome the unfavorable pace flow this time.
