One of the original races at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, the Mile, has always been run on the grass. This year’s edition happens on Saturday, November 4, at Santa Anita.

Over the years, the European horses have excelled in this race. Indeed, Englishman and former California trainer John Gosden won the first-ever running back in 1984, and this year at Santa Anita, there is once again expected to be a strong overseas contingent among the 14 starters in the gate.

Racing greats such as Da Hoss, Goldikova, Lure, and Tepin have been among the winners of this great race in the past, and this year’s renewal promises to be just as high-quality. The Mile tends to have a furious finish, often with the top runners close together, and is one of the most difficult races to handicap.

In 2020 at Keeneland, 73-1 shot Order of Australia won the race! However, last year, Modern Games ran to heavy favoritism. Will this year shape up for a long shot or the favorite? Keep reading to find out.

Selecting Your FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile Bets

Given the prevalence of the European mile turf form, before making a final selection, bettors should be aware of the results of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series races, world rankings, and which horses perform the best on the ground that comes up on Breeders’ Cup day, while also checking the times of the best US-based horses. Typically, in America, the turf comes up on the firm side, though, especially with the race being in Kentucky sometimes a rainstorm can blow through and make the ground more suitable for Europeans who prefer more give.

Above all else, keep checking back with us here at TVG. Our team of racing specialists are always on hand to offer expertise and insight as we get closer to post time in the Mile on November 6. TVG has information on contenders and much more besides to help you pick out your Breeders’ Cup Mile bet.

Breeders’ Cup Mile 2023 Contenders

With the race drawn, these are the leading contenders in the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Mile, and horses you should start with when deciding who goes on your tickets.

Casa Creed - Trainer: Bill Mott - Sire: Jimmy Creed

Though he is a top-level performer both at sprint and mile distances, this two-time winner of the Fourstardave is at his best right now at a mile. There is enough speed drawn in to make his running style, tracking a few lengths off the pace, an advantageous one. He has been freshened since August, but tends to run well fresh, and trainer Bill Mott should have him sharp.

Gina Romantica - Trainer: Chad Brown - Sire: Into Mischief

Trainer Chad Brown shines with fillies in this race. After she upset the well-proven In Italian by a head in the one-mile First Lady (G1) last month, he has decided to keep her at the distance and run her against males. She has serious class to prove, as she has yet to try top international company at a mile. But, if she can move forward second off her freshening and she doesn’t get into too much trouble from the two gate, she can be a surprisingly live price from the Chad Brown barn.

Kelina - Trainer: Carlos Laffon-Parias - Sire: Frankel

The seven-furlong Prix de la Foret (G1) at Longchamp is often a live prep for the Breeders’ Cup Mile, and this year Kelina beat the classy Kinross to take that crown. Not only does this three-year-old have strong form at the flat mile, but she often turns out her best work over firmer ground. That’s exactly what she will get at Santa Anita, making her a threat.

Master of the Seas - Trainer: Charlie Appleby - Sire: Dubawi

This five-year-old has turned into one of Charlie Appleby’s Godolphin globetrotters this year. He won the Zabeel Mile (G2) at Meydan before coming up short in a pair of nine-furlong races. Then, it was off to the United States for a pair of strong outings: A romp in the Woodbine Mile (G1), and then a nose second behind America’s best turf horse Up to the Mark in the Turf Mile (G1), at Keeneland. The question for him is class; his form is good, and Up to the Mark is live in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, but this field is deeper than any of those spots.

Mawj - Trainer: Charlie Appleby - Sire: Exceed and Excel

She finds a tough spot to face older company (and males) for the first time, but her class is evident. She took the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1) at Keeneland on the front end in her first start since winning the 1000 Guineas (G1). She turns back a furlong to the same distance as the Guineas, and she has shown in previous races that she can track the pace if necessary.

Songline - Trainer: Toru Hayashi - Sire: Kizuna

Horses based in Japan have shined at international meetings in recent years, and Songline is the best chance for a Japanese triumph in this year’s Breeders’ Cup. Though she was nosed out last out as the heavy favorite, that was a 1 ⅛-mile race. She turns back to the flat mile for the second start off the freshening, the same distance at which she has twice won the Yasuda Kinen, Japan’s premier turf mile.
