The last five Belmont Stakes winners have gone off at the prices of 14:1, 9:1, 3:4 (Triple Crown winner), 16:1 and 5:1. This trend suggests finding Belmont winners hasn’t been the easiest of tasks.

Contrast this with the Kentucky Derby, where all five favorites won during these years (and another in 2018) and a more clear picture begins to paint as to why this race is difficult not just for the horses, but for the bettors too.

Despite the fact that by mid-June we have seen the Road to the Kentucky Derby play out as well as the race itself, plus the Preakness at Pimlico of course, that form often means very little over this trip of a mile-and-a-half and players need to think outside the box.

The Main Contenders

Walking the line between stamina/breeding and the form of the other Triple Crown races is what fans are required to do to be successful in this race, as well as not being encapsulated by the hype surrounding Justify this year.

At this late stage, we have the gate position and recent form to combine with breeding and reputation of the contenders to attempt to piece together who has a serious chance of winning.

Blended Citizen (Doug O’Neill)

Blended Citizen finished over 4½ lengths behind Good Magic in the Blue Grass Stakes in the spring when still a very immature horse. He was given the chance to ease into this race with a Grade 3 win at Belmont four weeks ago.

He was a beaten favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile but lost very little in defeat that day and may keep his place as favorite for the Kentucky Derby and winning that would keep him at the head of this market too.

Bravazo (D Wayne Lukas)

Having been beaten by over eight lengths in Kentucky, there was definite improvement from Bravazo when only just failing to catch Justify in the Preakness Stakes. Bravazo had run out a tough schedule though and he could be a tired horse.

Gronkowski (Chad C Brown)

His form from Europe doesn’t quite sit at the level you may want to see for a Belmont contender and his breeding suggests more speed than stamina, but at least he’s a fresh horse.

Hofburg (Bill Mott)

Hofburg placed 7th in the Kentucky Derby and did keep on well all the way to the line. Hofburg also placed second in the Florida Derby back in April, behind Audible, which has given the trainer hope that he will stay. However, even for a fresh horse, this mile-and-a-half track is brutal for those not bred to do the job.

Justify (Bob Baffert)

Justify was brilliant in landing the Kentucky Derby but a Santa Anita Win and two tough Grade 1’s in two weeks on sloppy tracks is going to tax you no matter what type of horse you are. There is no way Justify is coming here in peak condition which has to be a concern. Our Triple Crown hope.

Tenfold (Steve Asmussen)

Not over-raced, Tenfold was a close-up third to Justify last time out in the Preakness and with a running style and breeding which suggests he may excel over this extra distance. He is definitely improving with racing and can take another step forward here to perhaps turn the tables on Justify.

Vino Rosso (Todd Pletcher)

He is by Curlin, the same sire as Tenfold and, like Tenfold, looks as though he will appreciate the longer trip better than most. Vino Rosso’s current form after winning the Wood Memorial by three lengths makes him as strong a contender as any in this year’s line-up and he will be hard to beat.

Belmont Stakes Odds

On the big day your horse’s odds could change from 3-1 to less than 2-1 in a matter of seconds, so it works well to use the below list as a good guide.

The pari-mutuel will determine the final odds but here’s how they stack up so far:

Post Horse Odds

1

Justify

4-5

2

Free Drop Billy

30-1

3

Bravazo

8-1

4

Hofburg

9-2

5

Restoring Hope

30-1

6

Gronkowski

12-1

7

Tenfold

12-1

8

Vino Rosso

8-1

9

Noble Indy

30-1

10

Blended Citizen

15-1

Breeders’ Cup form then is right to the fore as you would imagine, and if Bolt D’Oro should come out in the spring and win his opening race of the year then these odds will surely shrink some more. After the first two legs of the Triple Crown though a totally different picture could emerge for New York.
