Betting the Belmont Stakes a potential trap for bettors. Frequently, we have a Triple Crown hopeful in the line-up, and that is the case this year as Justify aims to become only the 13th ever winner.

Another Triple Crown winner, American Pharoah, was the shortest priced victor in the last five years at over 5:1. This lack of chalk really highlights how hard Belmont to win, due mainly to the testing nature of this race, which catches so many good three-year-olds racing the mile-and-a-half track.

Despite odds being a little higher than usually seen with winners of the Preakness and Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes stars do tend to be trained by the biggest handlers in the business, such as Todd Pletcher, Christophe Clement, and Bob Baffert, so they shouldn’t be too hard to find for handicappers.

How The Belmont Stakes Betting Odds Are Formulated

Although the morning line is always worth watching, the starting odds for the Belmont Stakes contenders at post time are decided by the pari-mutuel system on course. The final odds depend upon how popular each horse is with bettors around the country.

In other words, if there is a lot of money in the betting pool, but not many others are betting your horse, your horse’s odds will inflate. At the same time though, betting a horse that becomes a favorite with the racing nation often means a much smaller payout, an event we are bound to witness with Justify.

On the pari-mutuel betting system, odds will go up and down almost constantly during the lead up to the race, so be prepared not to know exactly what odds you will get on your horse until the gates open.

Where Do The Form Lines Come From?

Most strong Belmont contenders have come straight from the two other Triple Crown races -- the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Given that horses need to be ready in the spring and need genuine speed to win those, often we see some contenders sneak under the radar in advance of the Belmont having taken a different route.

Contenders this year have come via the following races:

Kentucky Derby (Churchill Downs, May 5)

Justify (the winner), Bravazo, Hofburg, Vino Rosso, Free Drop Billy and Noble Indy all ran in this race and, even ignoring the Preakness entirely for a second, this race naturally is a good trial for the Belmont – any three-year-olds handling ten furlongs in early May have a great chance of seeing out the twelve furlongs here.

Peter Pan Stakes (Belmont, May 12)

The contender from this race, Blended Citizen, stayed away from the Triple Crown route and ran in this Grade 3 race a week after the Kentucky Derby. Blended Citizen won well that day and comes to Belmont in fresh form any with proven stamina.

Preakness Stakes (Pimlico, May 19)

Justify won this one as well, ahead of renewed rival Bravazo, who finished second along with Tenfold. It’s interesting to note that the likes of Hofburg, Vino Rosso, and Free Drop Billy were kept away from this race and therefore will be fresher at Belmont. The 1 1/8 mile trip meant speed was of the essence, while plenty of stamina will be needed on June 9.

Europe

Oversees contenders are becoming a more consistent stable in the Triple Crown world. Gronkowski suffered an injury, keeping him from running in the Kentucky Derby, but he has since recovered and moved to the United States full time.

The European Road to the Kentucky Derby includes some major two-year-old races, as well as the Listed Burradon Stakes at Newcastle for three-year-olds. This set of races could prove to be a more recognized stepping stone to Belmont races in future years. Gronkowski comes into Belmont unbeaten in four races away from the turf, though some critics may find the lack of a truly compelling argument to beat out the field.
